Company C, 1st Tennessee Mounted Infantry
21 Oct 1863 - 13 Dec 1864
Asberry was the son of William W. Thomas and Sarah G. Herron. He married Mary Jane Palmer about 1865. Mary Jane's parents were Absalom Palmer and Sarah A. Rebecca Holly. Asberry and Mary Jane had six kids from 1866 to 1885. Mary Jane died 9 Apr 1927.
Asberry enlisted on 21 Oct 1863 at Carthage, Smith County, Tennessee and was mustered in 3 Dec 1863 in Nashville. He was present for all Company roll-calls and was mustered out on 13 Dec 1864. His service records do not document any significant events. The regiment was organized by Lt Col. Garrett in the early part of 1864, although a portion of the companies were not completed until the end of the year. The regiment served principally in the northeastern part of Middle Tennessee, where it had frequent and severe encounters with guerrillas. It was mustered out by companies, at different dates, from 13 Dec 1864, to 22 July 1865, by reason of expiration of term of service.
Asberry applied for and received an invalid pension on 18 Jun 1883. After Asberry died on 27 Jul 1924, Mary Jane applied for and received a widow's pension on 8 Aug 1924 until her death in 1927.
Asberry and Mary Jane are buried in the Thomas Cemetery in the Thomas Community of Putnam County, Tennessee.
