Company I, 5th Tennessee Cavalry, USA
15 Nov 1862 - 15 Apr 1863 - Deserted
David was the son of William Crawford and Prissila Patton. He married Malinda Jane Richardson - date/place unknown. Malinda's parents were Caleb Richardson and Martha "Patsy" Medlin. David and Malinda had two kids about 1860 and 1862. Malinda died sometime after 1880.
David enlisted on 15 Nov 1862 in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee. He was admitted to a "convalescent camp" in Nashville on 26 Dec 1862 and was noted as absent sick in hospital in Jan 1863. After recovery from his conditions he was present until 15 Apr 1863 when he deserted from the camp in Carthage, Smith County, Tennessee. His service record indicates he never returned to his unit.
David applied for an invalid pension on 3 Dec 1891 but the application was denied. I assume because of his desertion. But, I am waiting for a copy of the application to be sure.
David is buried in Maxwell Cemetery South in Baxter, Putnam County, Tennessee. He has a single tombstone. We do not know where Malinda is buried. There could have been a separation or divorce sometime in the 1870s as they are listed separately in the 1880 census and then he with a single tombstone. Of course this is speculation. More research is required to ascertain the facts.
As always, I welcome your input if you can correct or add anything to this record.
