Henry Gambrel

Tommy Roberts

Company I, 5th Tennessee Cavalry, USA

Born: About 1822 in DeKalb County ,Tennessee

Died: 24 Mar 1863 in Field Hospital #1, Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, Tennessee

Company I, 5th Tennessee Cavalry

6 Dec 1862-24 Mar 1863

We have not been able to learn who Henry's parents are. He married Abigail Maynard on 11 Feb 1847 in DeKalb County, Tennessee.  We do not know who her parents are. They had six children between 1847 and 1858.

Henry's service record shows that he was present for duty during all roll-calls. He died in the Field Hospital at Murfreesboro of typhoid fever. However, the family tradition is that he was wounded in the Battle of Stone's River (Murfreesboro) and died as a result about two months later. His service records do not verify him being wounded although that is possible. Abigail's pension application also says nothing about him being wounded. Only that he died of typhoid fever. That said, the unit did engage in the Battle of Stones River. Henry was either there or perhaps was already in the hospital.

Abigail received a widow's pension as well as a pension for her orphaned children under the age of 16.

James is buried in the Stones River National Cemetery in Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, Tennessee. He is in Section O, grave 6017. It is believed that Abigail is buried in the Maynard Cemetery near Silver Point, DeKalb County, Tennessee. She does not have an engraved tombstone.

Anyone having additional knowledge of this couple please contact me. Especially would like to know who their parents were.
