Joshua was the son of William "Billy" Thomas and Sarah Elizabeth Green. He married Elizabeth Massa on 30 Dec 1845 in White County, Tennessee. Elizabeth's parents were Adam Durham Massa and Guriah Margaret Smith. Joshua and Elizabeth had nine kids from 1847 to 1864. Elizabeth died sometime after 1880.


Joshua enlisted on 3 Dec 1863 in Carthage, Smith County, Tennessee and was mustered in on 22 Jan 1864. After Joshua enlisted he was present for all roll-calls except for two months when he was on unauthorized absence (AWOL). He returned from this absence and was accepted back into the unit without comment in his records. No other noteworthy events are recorded in his service records. He was mustered out 22 Jul 1865 in Nashville.

Joshua applied for and received an invalid pension on 3 May 1888. The children were all adults by this time. Therefore, no pension was applicable for them.


Joshua and Elizabeth are buried in the Allison Cemetery near the Thomas Community of Putnam County, Tennessee.
