Born: 6 Nov 1831in White County (Now Putnam County) Tennessee

Died: 14 Oct 1876 in Putnam County, Tennessee

Company C, 1st Tennessee Mounted Infantry

Mansfield is the son of Charles Smith Sr. and Didama Vance.  He married Martha Didama Barger and they had four kids before the war from 1855 to 1859. We don't know who her parents were and the surname of Barger is not certain. Some on the internet say Barger. Some say Richards. None offer any evidence of either. I haven't been able to find any documentation for either. After the war, on 29 Dec 1869, he married Adelaide Wallace.  Adelaide was the daughter of William Joseph Wallace and Elizabeth Ann Petty. They had three kids from 1870 to 1876.

Mansfield enlisted at Carthage, Smith County, Tennessee on 21 Oct 1863. He was mustered in on 3 Dec 1863 in Nashville. He was mustered out at Carthage on 13 Dec 1864. He was present for all roll calls during his time of service. There is no documentation of anything significant in his service records. Mansfield's father, Charles, served in the same unit as did several other local boys.

As far as we know, Mansfield never applied for an invalid pension. Adelaide drew a widow's pension on Mansfield's service after his death. I cannot find any evidence on pensions for his minor children. More research required.

Mansfield is buried in the Roberts #2 Graveyard (FAG name) or the Roberts Cemetery at Hickey (local name). Adelaide is in the Hugh Wallace Cemetery in Silver Point, Putnam County, Tennessee. We do not know where his first wife, Martha Didama is buried.
