William Barnett is the son of Jessie Thomas and Mary Demaris Kemp. He was named for his two grandfathers, William "Billy" Thomas and Barnett Kemp. As far as we can tell, he never married. His father, Jessie, applied for a dependent pension for William Barnett's civil war service.

His service record shows that he was mustered in on 6 Dec 1862 and was present for all roll-calls until his death. He died of unspecified disease in the camp at Carthage on 7 May 1863.

We do not know where William Barnett is buried.
