The Find-A-Grave link above will take you to their website for the Christian Cemetery. The website needs considerable work. The last burial here was in 1986. There are______ graves in the cemetery with tombstones. _______ are engraved. There is room for additional graves within the fenced area. There are signs of several unmarked graves. It is well fenced with barb wire.
At some point in the early 1900s someone planted several Pine trees in the cemetery. By the 2020s these were large trees. The pines were so large that in the 1950s some people began calling the cemetery, Pine Cemetery. However, Christian Cemetery remained the most prominent name. This name is derived from the surname of the people owning the property at the time the cemetery was started. Besides the trees, the cemetery was quite overgrown. A major cleanup was accomplished as you can see from the pictures in the gallery below. Thanks to all those who helped with this cleanup.
Of the engraved tombstones, the oldest person buried here is James Maynard who was born in 1815. James is the son of of John Maynard and Sarah Burton. John was born in North Carolina and was a pioneer/settler to this area.
James served in Company L, 5th Tennessee Cavalry, USA during the Civil War. He is not to be confused with James Calvin Maynard who also served as James Calvin was considerably younger. Robert A. Anderson, a Spanish American War veteran is also buried here.
The cemetery is located in Silver Point, Putnam County, Tennessee on the Defenders Retreat property. Once inside the gate of Defenders Retreat, the cemetery is immediately on the right and clearly visible from the driveway. The owner of Defenders Retreat has always been accommadating to anyone wanting to visit the cemetery.
This cemetery is fenced and somewhat maintained. Any maintenance is performed by the owner of the non-profit Defenders Retreat.
